It works similarly to iTunes, but with books. It is a free download and works with an iPad running iPhone OS 3. The EPUB standard is the most popular open book format in the world and that’s what the program will be using. iBooks’ page turning looks smoother and more engaging than Stanza’s, with page corners digitally curling toward you as you advance, but this is hardly different behavior than what you’d find in other digital readers.

iBooks supports amazing features like speaking a word on a page, find a word, character, or phrase anywhere in your book with the built-in search feature. IBooks will also include a progress bar to show how far you are along in a book, and you’ll be able to change the reader’s font size. It also lets you see two pages side-by-side in horizontal mode, like a traditional book. One thing I like about it is that it’s also compatible with the iPad’s VoiceOver functionality, allowing content to be automatically read aloud. It has a built-in dictionary: just tap and hold on a word and a definition will pop up. iBooks includes a built-in highlight feature called Bookmarks. iBooks indexes all of your bookmarks and lets you “unbookmark” or change the color at any time.

iBooks will automatically remember where you left off each time you close a book or return to your Home screen. Then it starts by presenting you with a “Library,” an attractive virtual wooden bookshelf containing up to 25 books in portrait mode or 24 books in landscape mode, scrolling downwards to reveal more books if you have them and it does not limit the number of books allowed on your bookshelf. iBooks is that good, and this app is one of the core reasons I’m convinced that Apple has created the first device that could realistically replace paper as the main medium for consuming the printed word.

Google book project was widely appreciated by the libraries and many world renowned institutions like the Harvard University, Stanford University, Michigan University and the Oxford University became the initial partners of the Google library project. The main aim was to digitalize over one million books in the world and make them accessible to the people at large through internet. However some authors and publishers criticized Google because of violating the copy rights of the books and suits were filed against Google. But in the greater benefit of the human civilization many libraries are still helping Google in developing and improving their program.

You can search for some of your favorite authors and titles, and can even obtain copies of it in digital format. Since much of Google’s revenue comes from paid advertising, it still manages to find time to make organic search as relevant as possible. Google wants to be able to show the user exactly what they are looking for. With an index full of trillions of web pages from all over the world, it aims to show the user exactly what they are looking for.

One of the ways that Google is trying to expand its information offering is by adding more data to its search databases. Book enthusiasts can scan books into Google Book Search and this goes straight into the index for people to search. Users can do this by using a normal barcode scanner or typing in the title of the book, or entering the ISBN number. Once Google has formed a profile of the type of books you like to read about it tries to sell you digital versions of the book, which are targeted towards your needs.

So, not only does Google get to add more information to its databases, there is also a huge opportunity to make money on the back of this, which is what Google’s business model is all about. Currently, Google offers numerous products and services that allow users to design build and monitor various different things, but of the paid services it has, it stands to make a killing as it moving towards more subtle advertising, hence the targeted book advertising. PPC ads are Google biggest income at present, but as it looks to widen its product range, you can see that it will always be making more than it will lose, year in year out.
